Episode 8 – Portomarin to Palas de Rei

Yesterday who knows why but it was our strongest day of walking yet. We set out of Portomarin early and Hannah led the charge setting a wicked pace of under 20 minutes a mile for over 5 miles. We conquered the summit of Sierra Ligonde like Grant took Richmond. The Camino at times was thick with pilgrim traffic but we soldiered on and arrived in Palas de Rei a little after 4:00 pm. We had covered 16.06 miles with an average pace of 19 minutes 24 seconds! We met lots of people along the way from every part of the world and made several stops for needed nourishment. I love those albóndigas.

Last night we stayed at this incredible country inn named Casa de Caminho owned and operated by an English couple Kim and Sue who moved to Galicia 8 years ago. Their dream was to have an Inn on the Camino and they did it up in a big way. They built the 5 room piece of paradise out of some old ruins. Incredible furnishings, food and attention. How Cary would love this place!

Today it’s off to Arzua about 28 kilometers (over 16 miles) but it’s mostly flat a little up and gradual descent. We walk through Melide which strangely because it’s located 200 kilometers from the coast is the pulpería capital of Spain. Should be another great day but maybe a little hot as the temp approaches 90 degrees.

Hannah has a couple of small blisters and sore muscles (me too) but we are eager to meet the day ahead.

Buen Camino
